Volcanos, earth shift vertically and horizontally.
Tihnk of an egg. Think of it’s shell.
The earth has a”shell” just like the egg BUT in comparison it is much thinner than the eggshell! This is to show you how fragile the land we live on over our planet is!
Think of the yolk in the egg. That is the red hot magma in the centre of the earth. It is pressurised and trying to find a way out.
Now you can realise how the seemingly impossible of the earth’s crust breaking up is in reality very easy to understand.
Think of the eggshell broken – but the inner film still holding it all together.
The broken pieces bang together/ separate away.
Now change to Iceland. The North America plate and the European plate are scraping/banging together.
Iceland is being torn apart roughly North East to South West into 2 pieces. In places you can see the rift being over 2 miles long with a 300ft up/down difference!
Where there is weakness the magma can force it’s way up the “cracks” and forms volcanos!
I recently flew along the Himalayas from Nepal to view Everest and the “folded mountain range” where the Indian plate is pushing up / into Asia plate was so obvious.
On the ground it looks so big/solid/formidable/impossible to move/flex but if you think of the egg shell comparison it is no big deal!
